Global Youth Leaders Experience Ahmedabad’s Smart Rainwater Harvesting Model

Leadership Collective 2026 participants visit L.D. College of Engineering to understand groundwater conservation and climate-resilient urban water management

AHMEDABAD, GUJARAT | 22nd JULY 2026 | As water scarcity continues to emerge as one of the most critical challenges facing countries across the globe, creating awareness about rainwater harvesting and sustainable groundwater management has become more important than ever. Reinforcing this message, 50 high school students from several countries, participating in Leadership Collective 2026, visited L.D. College of Engineering, Ahmedabad, to experience one of the city’s successful smart rainwater harvesting systems.

Leadership Collective 2026 brings together a global cohort of young leaders to explore the evolving relationship between climate change and cities through immersive learning experiences. The Ahmedabad visit provided participants with first-hand exposure to how innovative water management practices can strengthen urban resilience and ensure long-term water security.

The site visit was organized by Sauhard Foundation with technical support from SPACE ELEMENTS. The students explored a smart rainwater harvesting system that has been functioning efficiently for several years with minimal maintenance, demonstrating the long-term effectiveness of scientifically designed groundwater recharge systems.

During the interactive session, experts explained the complete groundwater cycle, aquifer systems, rainwater harvesting, and the importance of artificial groundwater recharge in addressing increasing water demand and declining groundwater levels. The discussion also highlighted how cities can integrate nature-based and engineering solutions to become more resilient to climate change.

Speaking during the session, representatives from SPACE ELEMENTS emphasized that groundwater is often described as an “invisible resource.” Although it cannot be seen, it sustains drinking water supplies, agriculture, industries, and ecosystems. Unfortunately, its importance is often realized only when borewells begin to fail, water levels decline, and communities face severe water shortages. They stressed that proactive groundwater recharge through rainwater harvesting is far more effective and economical than attempting to restore depleted aquifers later.

The interaction encouraged students to look beyond the technical aspects of rainwater harvesting and understand its broader social, environmental, and economic significance. Participants actively engaged in discussions on climate adaptation, urban sustainability, and community participation, recognizing that water conservation is a collective responsibility shared by governments, institutions, professionals, and citizens alike.
