“Both sides of my family were directly involved in the freedom struggle,” Ira Dubey who portrays Fatima Jinnah opens up on Freedom at Midnight

Ahmedabad 12 November 2024: As India’s struggle for independence comes alive on screen, Freedom at Midnight, the highly anticipated series, promises to delve deep into the tumultuous events that shaped the nation’s history. Each actor associated with the series feels close to it differently and uniquely.

Ira Dubey, who essays the role of Fatima Jinnah, Jinnah’s sister, shares her insights on the significance of this period drama. She said, “Since childhood, I’ve grown up hearing deeply personal, lesser-known stories of India’s independence movement that are woven into the fabric of our family history. Both sides of my family were directly involved in the freedom struggle—my maternal grandfather, who worked for the Railways, would recount the harrowing sight of trains arriving in India filled with bodies. His brother, a contemporary of Pandit Nehru, was dedicated to the movement and wore khadi exclusively as a sign of his commitment. On my paternal side, my grandfather went to prison twice, and Gandhiji himself once stayed at my great-grandmother’s home, while her brother also faced imprisonment for the cause. These memories are etched deeply within me, and they give me a profound sense of responsibility to bring this part of our past to life.”

Freedom at Midnight is based on the eponymous book by Larry Collins and Dominique Lapierre featuring a talented ensemble cast, including Sidhant Gupta, Chirag Vohra, Rajendra Chawla, Arif Zakaria, Malishka Mendonsa, Rajesh Kumar, KC Shankar, Luke McGibney, Cordelia Bugeja, Alistair Finlay, Andrew Cullum, and Richard Teverson in pivotal roles.

Produced by Emmay Entertainment (Monisha Advani & Madhu Bhojwani) in association with StudioNext, this series boasts a stellar team behind the scenes, with Nikkhil Advani at the helm as showrunner and director.

Freedom at Midnight streaming on 15th November exclusively on Sony LIV!
